Mediterranean Magic: Ten Must-See Ports

Explore the sites and flavors of these incredible destinations

Share:

From the rich culture to the stunning coastlines, there’s no question why the Mediterranean is favored by travelers from around the world. While the highly visited destinations of the region never go out of style, there are many more can’t-miss locations waiting for you to explore.

Calvi, Corsica, France

The breathtaking city of Calvi is at the north-west tip of the island of Corsica, a French territory located in the heart of the Mediterranean, right between mainland France and Italy.

The city has a fascinating past of Greek and Roman rule that is reflected in architectural landmarks, such as the city’s citadel. Built by a Corsican Lord in 1268, the citadel sits atop the town with an iconic presence. Christopher Columbus was born here and likely strolled along these cobblestones to meet others at the Place d'Armes, the central square of the fortress.

Take in the history of Old Town before you reach the jewel of the citadel: St. Jean Baptiste Cathedral. This towering baroque-style cathedral from the 13th century holds many ornate wonders and an altar you must see to believe. In Calvi’s ‘lower town,’ at the base of the ramparts, a bright pink church may catch your eye. This is the Santa Maria Church, another iconic religious landmark within the citadel walls. Stop in to admire the intricate tiles and religious art and leave with a little extra serenity from the peacefulness you’ll feel inside.

After exploring the fortress, the Landry Quay promenade is the perfect place for stopping here and there to sample regional food and wine. Game meats, like wild boar, fresh seafood in Corsica's take on bouillabaisse, and cheeses such as brocciu are prominent on menus of this stylish stretch of street. Don’t skip the savory casseroles, dishes featuring Corsican chestnuts, or classic zesty lemon cheesecake. While in port, join our Calvi Walk and Tasting excursion or visit a local winery to experience all the flavors of the city. Be sure to purchase some local wine or honey as a sweet souvenir before you say goodbye to the splendor of Calvi.

Portofino, Italy

Ciao, Portofino! The picture-perfect fishing village of Portofino is a gem of the Italian Riviera. Colorful buildings decorate the town along with sailboats that bob in the bright teal water of the harbor.

Portofino has quiet elegance; classy and cool all at once. Take your time strolling through the numerous stunning piazzas or stop to sip a cappuccino and admire the beauty around you. Piazza delle Fontane Marose is one of the most gorgeous and romantic, while Piazza de Ferrari is known for dazzling bronze fountains and is a short walk from a home once lived in by Christopher Columbus. Whether you’re looking for architecture or ambience, you’ll find it in a piazza.

The city itself is a work of art and is also home to world-famous masterpieces. Art lovers will enjoy Palazzo Bianco and Palazzo Tursi. These two museums have extraordinary frescos, paintings, sculptures, and even Paganini’s violin on exhibit, all adding to the Old-World feel. These museums are also a part of Le Strade Nuove and the Palazzi dei Rolli, which are a collective of streets and palaces in the town that are named UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Not to be outdone by the sites and art, the dining scene in Portofino also shines. The village is known for its fresh seafood, focaccia, and unforgettable pesto. While pesto is simple, it’s bursting with flavors from the fresh basil and local olive oil; it’s a must-try. Include a perfectly chilled regional white wine and celebrate your elegant day in Portofino with a toast to Italy.

Taormina, Sicily, Italy

Mount Etna keeps watch over the lively hilltop town of Taormina. On the eastern coast of Sicily, just across from the mainland, a day here will capture your heart. Start with a stroll along the cosmopolitan main street, Corso Umberto. This stretch is lined with stylish boutiques, cafés, and artisan shops; it’s vibrant with energy from the historic city center. The street leads to Piazza Duomo, a stunning town square where you can cool down with a refreshing Sicilian frozen granita.

Taormina’s architecture is notable for its beauty. Two highlights are Corvaja Palace, built in the 15th century and full of mesmerizing Arabian, Norman and Gothic influences, and a Greek Roman theater from the 3rd century. Both sites are of special interest to history enthusiasts and photography lovers.

Another highlight of this port is Seabourn’s complimentary Shopping with the Chef Signature excursion. Join your ship’s Executive Chef at the local food market to learn how they hand-select local sun-ripened produce, meats, cheeses and seafood like swordfish that’s caught right off the town’s coast. It’s a special chance to learn about the regional cuisine of Taormina, offering an insider’s view of what goes into creating Seabourn’s world-class culinary experience.

Rhodes, Greece

In the cluster of Dodecanese islands stretching across the Aegean Sea toward south-western Türkiye you’ll find Rhodes. This unforgettable Greek island is a treat for the eyes and palate. Your adventure begins when two towering columns, topped with statues of a stag and a doe, welcome you into Mandraki Harbour.

The archaeology of Rhodes is steeped in history from mythological to medieval. You won’t want to miss visiting Lindos for its iconic clifftop Acropolis. Once a statuesque citadel, these captivating mythological ruins have ancient ties to The Iliad and the Goddess Athena. You’ll get a full view of the sea from the Acropolis, and you’re sure to spot the domed roof and stone tower of the Virgin Mary of Lindos Church in the village below. After heading back down the hill, stop into the church to admire the 15th-century biblical frescoes.

For the full historic experience, add a trip to Medieval Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in northern Rhodes to your excursion list. Once ruled by knights and the Turkish, medieval meets modern-day as the jaw-dropping stone castle and cobblestone streets are surrounded by bars, shops, and fine restaurants.

With Rhodes being so close to Türkiye, Mediterranean flavors blend with African and Asian influence. The result is a treat for your taste buds. Spices such as cumin make regional dishes like lakani (goat, chickpeas and wheat baked in a clay pot) rich with savory flavors. Take part in Seabourn’s Shopping with the Chef excursion here as well, to visit a local marketplace with your ship’s Executive Chef. You’ll see local farmers selling Rhodes’ specialties like bulgur wheat, berries, fresh fish, and the famous local honey. Pick up a local red or white wine in the market during your outing to bring an extraordinary reminder of Rhodes back home with you.

Kotor, Montenegro

A majestic mountain backdrop and signature red roof tiles set the scene for the beautiful city of Kotor in the Balkan Bay. From Venetian to medieval times, everything you’ll see here is picturesque. In fact, the stunning Natural and Culturo-Historical Region that encompasses the Bay and Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Kotor is full of charm, and there’s no shortage of cathedrals and castles full of character. Pass through one of the three unique gated entrances of Old Town to tour St. Tryphon's Cathedral, Church of St. Nicolas, and Church of Our Lady of Remedy. Boutiques, shops, and cafés weave newness into the fabric of the old city.

You can also take a deep dive into the port’s seafaring past at the Maritime Museum. Afterwards, consider a walk along the tranquil bay and catch a boat ride to visit Our Lady of the Rocks, a famous domed church on a tiny island. The inside is gorgeous; it’s a must-see.

The cuisine in Kotor ranges from light, fresh seafood to rustic dishes rich in meats and cheeses. Mackerel, squid, and mussels — often seen on both casual and fine-dining menus — are sourced straight from the local markets. With Seabourn’s complimentary Shopping with the Chef excursion in this port as well, you’ll gain an insider's view of the city’s vibrant food scene and see firsthand how your ship’s Executive Chef selects the freshest ingredients. The markets here are abuzz with energy, filled with colorful produce, bright berries, savory prosciutto, and homemade pastries like flaky baklava that are simply too good for you to pass up.

Agios Nikolaos (Crete), Greece

Greece’s southernmost island, Crete, is home to the charming village of Agios Nikolaos. This destination in the Gulf of Mirabello checks off the three biggest boxes on a savvy traveler’s list for Greece: beautiful waterfronts, sight-seeing, and flavorful fare.

First, let Ammos beach take your stresses away. Right next to the marina, the crystal-blue water is famously calm and shallow, so it’s perfect for wading in before settling back under an umbrella. The village has a lake in the city center that’s also connected to the marina. The views of Lake Voulismeni, rumored to be a favored bathing hideaway of the Greek goddesses Athena and Artemis, the huntress, add to the pure paradise of this port.

Consider an excursion to the Minoan Palace of Knossos; it was recently added to the famed list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. With ties to legends of the Minotaurs and Icarus, this is a significant site for the ancient, sophisticated civilization of the Minoans. Dating around 7000 BC, this multi-story and complex palace was the center of politics, religion, and celebrations of the time. The feeling of history in the air is powerful here.

Before the day is done, wander into a welcoming bar along 28th October Street, a lively shopping district named for a national holiday celebrating Greek bravery. Sip a local Cretan wine or raki, a traditional pomace brandy. Crete’s dry climate gives its red and white wines complex, fruity notes. With over 60 wineries, you’re tasting a tradition perfected over centuries. Fine restaurants and tavernas that surround the lake area and town offer a cuisine distinct from mainland Greece. Like the wine, the food reflects the island’s unique climate and ingredients. Traditional Greek dishes such as moussaka, grilled meats, and fresh seafood take on a Cretan twist with bold herbs and local flavors. Savor it all before you leave this unforgettable paradise.

Hvar, Croatia

The quiet seaside beauty of Hvar will delight all your senses. From the scent of lavender carried by the breeze, the sound of palm trees rustling and turquoise waves crashing ashore, the stunning scenery, to the taste of local figs, olives, and salted fish. Feel the warmth of sun as you stretch out on a sprawling beach — Hvar is famously the sunniest location in all of Europe.

From the ocean to the countryside, Hvar has so much to offer. Visit Stari Grad Plain, a fascinating historical landmark and UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back to the 4th century, to see early evidence of agricultural life from the ancient Greeks. As you tour the grounds, imagine the challenges settlers faced and admire the genius behind the use of resources. This grid of land with stone walls and shelters is inspiring; after all, this brilliant geometric system of land division was sustainable for over 2,400 years.

Be sure to make a trip to a local vineyard. By nature’s design, the full-bodied reds, whites, and prosecco produced at family-run wineries here pair perfectly with the incredible dishes in Croatian cuisine. Hvar’s sea-to-table approach to food is simple, yet elegant. Think fresh-caught and grilled white fish drizzled with local olive oil. Try a dish cooked under a peka, a bell-shaped lid used to perfectly slow roast lamb, octopus, or veal, for an authentic culinary experience. Whatever you eat, see, or do in Hvar will be nothing short of magical.

Kuşadası, Türkiye

Set on the western coast of Türkiye, Kuşadası has a rich, mythical background. Also, not to be missed are the pristine beaches and charming streets of the old quarter. Both add to the distinctive beauty of Kuşadası. To soak in the local culture, head through the maze of streets to the town’s vibrant bazaar. It’s the perfect spot to browse traditional Turkish clothing, handcrafted items, and unique gifts.

Here too you can join Seabourn’s Shopping with the Chef excursion. You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at the regional cuisine as you explore a local market and learn about traditional ingredients. Your ship’s executive chef will guide you through the marketplace as they hand-select the very best produce and catches of the day. While there, be sure to purchase fragrant spices and sample some delicious baklava. Before you head back to the ship, be sure to try traditional Turkish kabobs, shish-kabobs, flatbreads and an authentic meze. Just like the sites, the flavors of Kuşadası will astound you.

You don’t have to be a history buff to fall in love with the ruins surrounding the town; well-preserved sites like the ancient city of Ephesus still have a fascinating story to tell. Ephesus is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is nothing short of enchanting. It dates back to the 11th century BC and was the honeymoon location for Cleopatra and Marc Anthony. The remains of churches, the grandiose theater, and temples are breathtaking. And, with Seabourn’s complimentary Evening at Ephesus Signature Event, you can attend a private, after-hours cocktail party at this extraordinary site. Imagine sipping a drink and listening to music where Alexander the Great once rode his chariot — a truly magical and unforgettable experience.

Istanbul, Türkiye

Istanbul is exotic, fascinating, and intoxicatingly beautiful. Start your day here in Sultanahmet, the historic heart of the city. At its center is Sultanahmet Square, home to the some of the city’s most iconic landmarks including the Obelisk of Theodosius, originally built more than 3,500 years ago in Egypt and the stunning Blue Mosque, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built in the early 17th century. Across from the square is the Hagia Sophia, another UNESCO site and a marvel of Byzantine architecture that has been both a cathedral and a mosque since it was built in the 6th century.

Just a short walk away you’ll arrive at Topkapi Palace, yet another UNESCO site. This Ottoman palace is full of breathtaking art, artifacts, and jewels. Get your camera ready for the unbelievable courtyards and views of the Golden Horn and Sea of Marmara.

Another unique Istanbul experience is exploring its vibrant marketplaces. The famous Spice Market and Grand Bazaar are two distinct outdoor markets. The Spice Market is world-famous for its fragrant mounds of spices and teas, while the Grand Bazaar is packed with vendors selling rare goods. Both are bursting with colors and energy, and either one (or both) is sure to be a delight.

Speaking of delight, make sure to sample an authentic Turkish delight — a sweet treat and just one of the many must-try elements of Turkish cuisine. From traditional Turkish coffee to kabobs, you’ll taste the vibrant notes that reflect the fusion of local flavors and influences from around the world. From street food to restaurants, Istanbul’s culinary scene is worthy of international acclaim.

Valencia, Spain

The bright blue water and sunny skies (300 days of sun a year) of Valencia will welcome you into port, but what you’ll find there is so much more than just pristine beaches. Valencia is a wonder of Gothic architecture, natural beauty, and centuries of bold culture.

Must-see attractions include the City of Arts and Sciences (Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias) designed by Valencia-born architect Santiago Calatrava. This cultural center, which features an arts venue, an oceanographic park, and a museum, showcases some of Calatrava’s most iconic and unmissable masterpieces. And, say “¡Olé!” to the Plaza de Toros, the 19th century, neoclassical style bullfighting ring where fights are still held. Reminiscent of the Roman Coliseum, it's spectacular to behold.

Visit Old Town for a chance to see the Holy Grail. The sacred chalice — a religious icon — is housed inside the Valencia Cathedral. This Gothic style cathedral along with the Miguelete bell tower stands between two famous town squares: Plaza de la Reina and the Plaza de la Virgen. Old Town is also home to UNESCO World Heritage Site, La Lonja, the Old Silk Exchange where merchants from far and wide traded silks. Words cannot describe the inside of the grand halls of La Lonja. The main hall is full of Gothic columns decorated with ornate carvings that climb up the pillars like vines and massive windows with detailed ironwork that leave lace-like shadows on the floor.

Grab an ice-cold horchata, a traditional drink made from tiger nuts, as you make your way to Mercado Central. This sprawling marketplace is filled with vendors selling fresh Manchego cheese, jamón, seafood, spices, and more. With Seabourn’s Shopping with the Chef excursion you can accompany your ship’s Executive Chef on a visit to the market as they source local delicacies. Take in the rich aromas of the spices that flavor iconic dishes like paellas and tapas, which you’ll want to sample at a cozy tapas bar or fine restaurant while sipping a bubbly cava made right here in Valencia.

Discover the splendors of the Mediterranean’s most stunning locales when you book a luxury Seabourn cruise. Each port of call offers you a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the beauty, rich culture, history, and flavors of these unforgettable destinations.
