How To Keep Up Your Fitness Routine On A Cruise

Carve out some time to work up a good sweat.

Setting sail on a cruise doesn’t mean your workout routine has to fall by the wayside. You can make exercise part of your vacation. No, you don’t have to run laps around the deck. But there are easy ways—from enjoying the wealth of onboard exercise options to a quick run around your port of call—to squeeze in a workout between sightseeing, sunsets, and lounging around the pool. Here’s how to keep your fitness routine rolling at sea.

Make the Time

You’re on vacation! Shut off your email. Leave the to-do list at home. Sleep in. But remember: you’ve got all day to do what you want to do. And you need to sweat a little. We’re not talking about marathon training. Just set aside 30-60 minutes to get in your workout of choice—whether it’s a quick morning yoga session or a pre-dinner spin on the exercise bike. It’ll make those drinks by the pool taste that much better.

Running will take you to places your fellow cruisers will miss out on, from seaside esplanades and local parks to historic neighborhoods and epic vistas.

Running is the Best Way to See a City

Feel cooped up on the ship? Go for a run. You can cover more ground in less time and explore further away from port than you might venture walking. Crunched for Time? Try a HIIT Workout

High intensity interval training (aka HIIT) is the best bang-for-your-buck workout. You can burn a bunch of calories and work up an excellent sweat in just 30 minutes. Choose your favorite body weight exercises—from planks and burpees to push ups and squats—and mix them up with quick, hard bursts on the exercise bike or treadmill in the world-class gyms aboard one of our ships.

Take a Seabourn Class

Let’s face it: some of us aren’t self starters. That’s what classes are for. By signing up, you’ll hold yourself accountable. And onboard Seabourn we offer yoga, pilates, and Tai Chi. So sign up and make your way down to the gym—you can thank us later.

Relax at Sea

You don’t need a teacher to zen out with 20 minutes of yoga or a mellow guided meditation. There are lots of great smartphone apps for both yoga and meditation. Gaiam’s yoga studio app will walk you through classes of your length and skill level. And Headspace will lead you on guided meditations to put you in, well, a good headspace.
